The site was fully dismantled and remediation works are currently underway in order to develop the Vopak Energy Park Antwerp . The focus lies on storage projects for renewable raw materials and energy carriers. There are also options for offering production activities or additional services, such as liquefaction or purification.   “Vopak is an independent player, facilitating the energy transition with infrastructure, and multi-modal connectivity to the site,” explains Maxime Peeters, Business Developer for Vopak Belgium . The site has options for transport via train, roads, deep-sea and inland navigation and proximity to the future pipelines to North-West Europe for CO 2 and hydrogen. The company wants to build an energy system that is ready for the future . A system in which different types of molecules - natural gas and biomethane today and hydrogen and CO 2 tomorrow - flow safely and efficiently through existing and new pipelines. Heading type H2 Text " Pipelines are one of the most efficient, safe and sustainable ways to transport energy or CO 2 ," explains Raphaël De Winter, Senior VP Business Development and M&A at Fluxys . "To transport the same amount of energy you need either 69 coal trains, 1,465 diesel trucks, or.... one gas pipeline (1 metre in diameter). A pipeline creates far fewer emissions, no noise pollution, needs less space and also has no visual impact."   In the region around Zeebrugge, Fluxys has currently expanded around 90 gigawatts of capacity through direct pipelines to Norway, the UK and France , as well as through its own LNG Terminal. "You can compare that to 90 nuclear power plants, each with a capacity of 1000MW. Huge capacity in other words, which is directly connected via pipelines to consumer markets but also to the underground storage installation in Belgium and neighbouring countries. In this way, the energy from molecules can be stored and distributed when it is needed most, even in periods with no wind or sun. This flexibility is one of the major advantages." The company wants to help reduce emissions in general, by building an efficient, reliable and feasible energy system which combines green and low-carbon molecules as well as CO 2 capture. A system based on one single form of energy is not socially responsible. Hydrogen will play a role in the gradual decarbonisation of industry, but CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilisation & Storage) is also a necessary link in this regard.   Some of the CO 2 can be reused, for example, in building materials. But the biggest potential today is in safe storage: deep under the North Sea , in empty gas fields or in saline aquifers. "You have enough storage there for the next few centuries" explains Raphaël, "and what's more, we are going to need it. What not many people realise is that the CO 2 does not stay in gas form there, but eventually mineralises. So it turns into a kind of limestone." To that end, they are building three major CO 2 export hubs with various partners.    These infrastructure projects are crucial to transport and store captured CO 2 from Northwestern Europe . In this regard, they are primarily looking at the Ruhr region, the Belgian ports and the valley of the Sambre and Meuse rivers. The envisaged capacity is 20 to 35 million tons per year.  Title 3. Ghent Carbon Hub Heading type H3 Text An important project for industry in Ghent which also includes a liquefaction terminal . 4 million tons of CO 2 is expected to transit through here each year. Size Small Title Are there challenges? Of course... Heading type H2 Text There are currently a number of important challenges in developing a CO 2 network. The first is the current limited storage capacity in Europe. "Although this shortage will disappear in the next few years as more sinks are developed for CO 2 storage," Raphaël nuances.   The second challenge is getting enough critical mass to build the infrastructure . That will require significant investment. To recoup that investment, you need to be able to collect enough CO 2 streams in the first phase.    There are also still challenges in the regulatory domain . For example, CO 2 is a regional competence in Belgium. These policy frameworks still need to be fleshed out. For example, a CNO (Carbon Network Operator) still needs to be appointed in Flanders, Wallonia and the Antwerp port area. Heading type H3 Text Hydrogen gas (H 2 ) is barely to be found on earth, but hydrogen atoms are hidden in larger compounds with other elements. Extracting the  hydrogen from these molecules  requires a lot of energy. Depending on the energy source used for its production, we distinguish between  grey, blue and green hydrogen . The captured CO₂ is reused for other applications. This is an important step towards green hydrogen. This energy is released once more when the hydrogen gas reconnects with other atoms. This is what makes hydrogen is an  energy carrier . Despite of its energy intensive production, hydrogen has many advantages: it causes no emissions when burned and its production can be completely green.   Hydrogen has several applications and can be used: to  store surplus energy . as an  alternative energy source  in industry. as  fuel  in the transport sector. By combining locally produced solar and wind energy and purchased green electricity, they can produce 12,500 tonnes of liquid and gaseous green hydrogen per year for the European market. Title 1.2 Local blue production Heading type H4 Text Antwerp@C aims to capture, liquefy and store CO₂ intermediately (Carbon Capture & Storage, CCS) by 2030 and then ship it to underground storage. Using captured CO₂, natural gas is converted to blue hydrogen and stored underground. With the A@C consortium, which also includes Kairos@C from BASF and Air Liquide, work is ongoing on the necessary CO₂ infrastructure to make this possible.  Title 1.3 Renewable energy imports Heading type H4 Text There is not enough wind or solar energy in Belgium and Western Europe to supply the port and all its users with green energy. This means we need to import renewable energy from regions where sun and wind are available in large quantities.   We are therefore committed to the global  supply or  importing of hydrogen and its carriers   from   countries such as Chile, Oman, Namibia, USA, Canada, Egypt or Brazil. There is a surplus of green electicity from solar and wind energy there. The  global spread  of these regions ensures that Belgium and Europe are  less dependent  on a small number of countries for their energy supplies. We expect the first imports in 2026.   The Hydrogen Import Coalition , comprising leading players such as DEME , Engie , Exmar , Fluxys , WaterstofNet and Port of Antwerp-Bruges, recently presented a detailed roadmap for hydrogen import in Belgium. This ambitious strategic vision provides insight into possible future scenarios and the associated infrastructure development. Media Port of Antwerp-Bruges as lever for a global hydrogen supply chain_UNI_2022 07 Title How do you import energy? Heading type H5 Text You can import energy in the form of hydrogen bound to another molecule. Port of Antwerp-Bruges is committed to importing large volumes of sustainable hydrogen (carriers) , such as liquid hydrogen, methanol, ammonia, synthetic methane and Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC's). The latter substance is a pure transport molecule for hydrogen . At the port, we convert these substances back into pure hydrogen that we can use as a raw material or fuel. Fluxys is working on an open-access hydrogen pipeline connecting Antwerp and Zeebrugge with the German hinterland and the other neighbouring countries. Any company can connect to an open-access pipeline. Title Reception terminals Heading type H4 Text Port of Antwerp-Bruges already has the necessary infrastructure for receiving various hydrogen carriers such as methanol, ammonia and methane today. We are continuing to build these up for storing larger volumes . For example, Fluxys and Advario are planning to build an open-access import terminal for green ammonia by 2027 . Air Liquide is thus building a pilot plant for cracking ammonia (NH3) on an industrial scale in the port of Antwerp. For example, the chemical industry uses hydrogen in large quantities in the refining or production of chemicals.
