Zuidnatie opens sustainable slitting centre

In June, logistics provider Zuidnatie opened a new steel service centre at its terminal in Antwerp. At this service centre, customers can have coils up to 32 tonnes cut or "slit," a first in Europe. The project represents an investment of 13.5 million euros.

Steel processing in a single location

Zuidnatie's new slitting centre responds to growing customer demand for integrated steel processing solutions. Heavy steel coils arriving by ship are now slit on-site and delivered straight to the end user, eliminating unnecessary transport, reducing CO₂ emissions, and increasing efficiency. Powered by rooftop solar panels, this project reflects the Port of Antwerp-Bruges’ vision of becoming a climate-neutral hub by 2050.

Largest investment in five years

Construction of the slitting centre was a considerable feat of engineering. Challenges included the overnight transport of a heavy overhead travelling crane and the installation of a 12-metre-deep well under the supervision of a diver. The 13.5-million-euro investment is the largest expenditure made by the Belgian family business in the past five years. With this strategic move, Zuidnatie is strengthening its role as a future-ready logistics partner. The new centre supports economic growth, job creation, and sustainable business in the port, and positions the company at the forefront of international steel and liquid bulk logistics.
