How busy is the port?

In 2024, ships made nearly 312,000 movements in the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge. That amounts to an average of 854 movements per day, all requiring planning and coordination. Willem Serré, Performance Manager Nautical Operations, dives into these figures for us.

Majority of ship movements from inland navigation

Willem Serré: "Of all ship movements, 85% are accounted for by inland vessels. This is entirely normal, as they call at multiple terminals. Ocean-going vessels, such as car carriers, container ships, or tankers, made 47,252 movements last year, representing 15%. These ships require significantly more planning. A tanker is often less well-equipped to maneuver in the docks than a container ship, which calls at multiple ports. From a certain length onwards, tankers are therefore required to sail with a dock pilot and one or more tugboats."

Managing the busy waterways and keeping all these ship movements under control requires the efforts of many colleagues.
