Arrival of Furnace for Project ONE: A Major Milestone

On January 15, the ship Zhu Yuan Kou from COSCO SHIPPING arrived in Antwerp from Thailand. On board: a massive furnace, 60 meters high.

A Small Part of the Bigger Pictur

The furnace is a key component of PROJECT ONE, INEOS's new ethane cracker. It will provide the heat needed to convert ethane into ethylene, one of the most important building blocks in the chemical industry. Ethylene is a fundamental raw material used in numerous applications, including car parts, medical devices, and sustainable energy solutions.

Along with the delivery of the furnace, several pipe racks were also transported. These racks support pipelines and other equipment. Despite their massive scale, these arrivals represent only a small fraction of the bigger picture. In June, Gosselin unloaded a splitter at the PSA Breakbulk terminal in Antwerp, another critical component for the project.

Gosselin is handling the construction site’s logistics and temporary storage of components for Project ONE on behalf of INEOS. The logistical service provider acts as the project’s control tower, managing the inbound and outbound transportation of materials, temporary storage of components, just-in-time movements on-site, assembly, inspections, and value-added services.

The Largest Chemical Investment in Europe Since 2000

The new ethane cracker for Project ONE is scheduled to be operational by mid-2026. The foundation stone was laid on December 15, 2022. According to INEOS, Project ONE represents the largest investment in the European chemical sector since the year 2000 and is expected to create around 450 new jobs. Furthermore, the new ethane cracker will produce half the CO2 emissions of the 10% least polluting ethane crackers currently in operation.
