Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and Port of Antwerp-Bruges join forces for maritime decarbonisation and digitalisation.

Memorandum of Understanding affirms the importance of collaboration

On March 21, 2025, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) took a significant step towards a greener and more technologically advanced maritime industry. The two entities signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on maritime decarbonisation and digitalisation, marking a milestone in their partnership.

This agreement sets the stage for both ports to share information and explore collaborative efforts in key areas such as reducing carbon emissions and enhancing digital capabilities. 

 

Jacques Vandermeiren expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "This MoU marks a significant step in the energy and digital transition. At Port of Antwerp-Bruges, we are committed to pioneering towards a sustainable and secure future. We are committed to collaborate and exchange knowledge within our partnerships.  We look forward to working closely with MPA to achieve our shared goals."

State visit

The MOU was signed by Mr Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO, Port of Antwerp-Bruges,  and Mr Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive, MPA on March 21. The MOU was exchanged on 25 March 2025 during the State visit to Belgium by His Excellency Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of the Republic of Singapore.  The MOU was exchanged between Mr Johan Klaps, Vice-Mayor (for the Port and Economy) of the City of Antwerp and President of the board of directors of Port of Antwerp-Bruges, and Mr Lim Hong Huai, Singapore’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Partnership is key to address global challenges

Teo Eng Dih highlights the importance of collaboration and knowledge exchange in driving innovation and sustainability in the maritime sector. "Our collaboration with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges marks an important step in advancing our shared goals of maritime decarbonisation and digitalisation. Collaboration and knowledge exchange will be key to driving innovation and achieving sustainability in the sector, and we look forward to the strengthened partnership with Port of Antwerp-Bruges to create a more sustainable, efficient, and secure maritime future.," he said.

 

Johan Klaps further emphasized the benefits of this partnership, noting that the Port of Antwerp-Bruges and MPA are intrinsically linked and share common challenges. “We are very pleased to build on our strong partnership with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. Our ports are intrinsically linked, which also means we share the same challenges. Further cooperation will therefore allow them to continue to grow into high-performing and environmentally friendly economic hubs." he added.
